My Story
Welcome to Karron Sews!
Like many children of the sixties, I enjoyed all kinds of crafts – junk modelling, painting and upcycling, sewing, puppet-making, and even writing poetry! I still have a patchwork bag that I hand-sewed when I was about 10 years old.
My love of making things, and being resourceful, comes from both of my parents. It has continued throughout my working life, particularly during my time as a teacher. I have enjoyed all sorts of crafts from floristry, paper crafts, art projects, home furnishings, but my passion has always been for sewing.
As a primary deputy head teacher, I taught children of all ages and abilities. Crafting was always the perfect way to develop confidence, relaxation, mindfulness and positivity in children, especially those experiencing mental health challenges. I have taught many children to sew, and how to use a sewing machine - I think these are important life skills to pass onto the next generation, and working with children is such a joy.
During the Covid pandemic, I was one of thousands of volunteers across the country who collected duvet covers, tablecloths and sheets from neighbours to make drawstring bags, scrubs, headbands, and even hospital gowns for the amazing NHS staff at Darlington and Bishop Auckland Hospitals. It was a really exciting time to be part of such a huge community project at a time of uncertainty. After the pandemic, I started my business by setting up sewing groups in local community centres, which then developed into offering workshops and courses to teach particular skills. This year I have opened my own sewing studio, and continue to design and make my own sewing kits.
Sewing is about so much more than producing a final product. I have run many crafting and sewing classes for both adults and children of all ages, and it is extremely satisfying to see the pleasure and confidence that they get from taking part in an activity and developing new skills together.
I also know from personal experience just how much sewing can lift your spirits, and make you feel better about yourself especially when you hit one of life’s bumps in the road! Sewing helps to reduce anxiety and distracts you from the stresses of everyday life, no matter what your skill level. It leaves you feeling happier and more positive, and it is great fun learning alongside others with similar interests. That’s why it’s important to have clear instructions and lots of encouragement because it is easy to feel disappointed or useless if things don’t work out as you’d planned.
I hope you can join me on a course, workshop, or at a group soon - let's get more people sewing!
Remember YOU CAN SEW TOO!
